Insects make up more than 70% of the earth's animal kingdom, and thanks to their diversity, they are attracting attention as an untapped biological resource worldwide. The government has enacted a law (2011) on the insect industry as a future industry, and the domestic market is expected to grow from about 300 billion won in 2015 to 700 billion won in 2020. In line with this domestic trend, other local governments are also paying attention to the insect industry by enacting ordinances and planning large-scale events such as insect expos. The global market is also expected to grow rapidly from 11 trillion won in 2007 to 38 trillion won in 2020.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the conditions and current status of the insect industry at home and abroad, the government and other local governments' strategies for fostering the insect industry, and to suggest a plan for fostering the insect industry in Chungbuk based on this. The direction of fostering the insect industry in North Chungcheong is convergence through the specialization of the insect industry by region and the 6th industrialization.

The development plan for each region is as follows. The central region will foster R&D in medicine, food, and cosmetics in connection with Osong's bio industry, and promote the industrialization of feed insects and convergence with insect experience services, centered on Cheongju. The Korea Jamsa Museum and the Cheongju Agricultural Technology Center can be used strategically. The southern region can establish a supply base for beetle larvae centered on Yeongdong, produce edible and medicinal insects through hygienic mass breeding, and provide experience opportunities. The northern region can host events to promote the pharmacological functions of insects in connection with the Oriental Medicine Expo, improve the image of insect resources, and promote the inducement of industrialization.

The detailed tasks for fostering the insect industry in North Chungcheong Province are as follows. It is to establish an insect industry cluster that can promote the survey of the insect industry including the actual status of insect resources in Chungbuk Province, the creation of the 6th industrialization complex for the insect industry including the function of the insect industry support center, the expansion of insect research and R&D support, the establishment of a network for fostering the insect industry, the support of specialized complexes for the industrialization and mass breeding of useful insects, the strengthening of education and promotion marketing, the cultivation and securing of experts in the insect industry, the marketing of the insect industry: linkage with the industrial design and cultural industry, and the promotion of activities such as insect experience events: edible insect cooking contests.
