 [ABSTRACT]

This study analyzes the spatial characteristics of traffic accidents involving elderly drivers in Chungcheongbuk-do and discusses policy implications in an aging society.

Over the past three years, a total of 1,507 traffic accidents involving elderly drivers occurred in the province, showing a clear increase despite a declining trend in overall traffic accidents.

This contrast highlights the need for targeted and spatially informed safety policies for elderly drivers.

Using Kernel Density Estimation (KDE), the study identifies 46 high-risk locations, including nine corridor-type segments, which account for approximately 21.5% of all elderly driver accidents.

These locations are distributed not only in major urban areas but also in county-level centers, and are primarily situated within daily living environments such as intersections, traditional market areas, commercial streets, and township-level roads. This spatial pattern differs from that of overall traffic accidents, which tend to concentrate along major arterial roads.

The findings indicate that conventional traffic safety strategies focused on arterial roads and traffic volume are insufficient. Instead, the findings suggest the need for a selective, location-based management approach.
